Tokaj protests against vast Slovakian power plant
Von wein-sigihiss, 10:47

Sam Spencer

Winemakers and politicians in Tokaj are united in condemnation of a proposal to site a huge power station near the celebrated wine region.

The Hungarian government is determined to put a stop to the 885-megawatt power plant – which is planned for the village of Trebisov, across the border in Slovakia to the north. If plans are approved this would be Slovakia's largest coal-fired power station.

Campaigns against the power plant have already been mounted, particularly in the Hungarian town of Satoraljaujhely, where mayor Peter Szamosvolgy is lobbying the government with some success.

Last week the Hungarian environment ministry informed the Slovakian government that it wished to vet the construction of the plant before it is issued with a licence.

Environmental groups are concerned not only for the chemical effect on the soil but an effect on the local climate. The distinctive flavour of the wines ofTokaj – some of the most sought-after sweet wines in the world – owes much to the climate of the region.

It is claimed the power station will produce an estimated four million tonnes of pollutants a year.

Burgundy saved from mildew threat
Von wein-sigihiss, 10:17

Oliver Styles
The mildew plague sweeping through French vineyards has not caught on in Burgundy due to the recent cold weather, say local growers.

Although there have been scattered reports of mildew affecting leaves in vineyards throughout the region, with the Cote Challonaise most affected, the incidents are rare and have not spread to the grapes where most damage occurs.

Christine Monamy, who monitors harvest conditions on behalf of the regional wine trade body (BIVB), told decanter.com that although mildew was present in the region, the 'cold weather has stopped the fungus developing'.

'It's nothing alarming,' said grower and producer Francois Parent in Pommard.

Claire Naudin, of Domaine Naudin-Ferrand, agreed that mildew posed little threat, but said that oidium (powdery mildew, not halted by cold conditions) and grey rot were concerns.

'There are small traces of grey rot in some vineyards in the region,' she said. 'We've had to do a few extra treatments to the vines.'

Despite the cold weather throughout France, the Burgundy harvest is running almost one month ahead of schedule due to early flowering in a warm spring. The harvest is set to take place in mid-August to early September, with white Maconnais and Crémant de Bourgogne leading the field.

'On average, the region is three weeks ahead of the harvest timetable,' said Monamy. 'Although you can't compare the two vintages, we're nine days ahead of the 2003 vintage.'

Bordeaux vineyards lose 90% of crop as rain and rot threaten French harvests
Von wein-sigihiss, 10:16

Jane Anson

The torrential rain afflicting northern Europe has left French vineyards at risk of losing much of the 2007 vintage from rot and mildew, with Bordeaux one of the worst-hit regions.

According to the Bordeaux Met Office 150mm of rain fell in May, 57mm in June, and July so far has seen 23mm.

Certain regions, such as Lesparre Medoc and Premieres Cotes de Blaye received up to 100mm in June. The damp, combined with intermittent days of warm, sunny weather, has created ideal conditions for mildew, a fungal parasite which starts in the leaves, moves to the sap and then attacks the grapes from within.

'It's been raining heavily throughout May, June and July – at first mildew was on the leaves, but it has now spread to the grapes,' Jean Christophe Mau of Chateaux Brown and Preuillac in Bordeaux told decanter.com. 'And once there is brown rot on the grapes, there is very little you can do.'

The southern Graves, where there are high levels of humidity, has been worst affected, with a few vineyards losing up to 90% of their crop, but the problem is being seen all over Bordeaux, especially affecting the merlot and semillon grapes.

'The rain is good for Chateau Gazin Rocquencourt because we have just planted lots of new vines,' said Severine Bonnie of Chateau Malatric Lagraviere. 'But I can't say the same for Malartic – this is going to be a very expensive year in the vineyards, because you have to be out there every single day ensuring the quality isn't being compromised.'

Francois Despagne, of Chateau Grand Corbin Despange in Saint Emilion was more upbeat.

'Despite the rain, the flowering has been even, and there is little example of 'coulure' (uneven fruit set),' he said. 'But it's certainly true that we need some uninterrupted good weather as a matter of urgency.'

Problems have also been reported in Beaujolais, the Loire and the Rhône valley.

Cru Bourgeois classification officially over
Von wein-sigihiss, 20:17

Jane Anson

The suspension of the Cru Bourgeois was rubber-stamped last week: the classification is officially annulled and use of the term Cru Bourgeois is now illegal.

The French fraud office (the DGCCRF) announced its decision at the end of June, via a letter delivered to the Gironde Wine Growers Federation. The use of the term Cru Bourgeois on bottles would be illegal. 'In the absence of a full classification, the term can not be used,' the letter read.

Since the initial suspension in February 2007, following legal challenges brought against the 2003 classification by excluded property owners, chateaux have been unsure exactly what was allowed or not allowed on the labels, and although a definitive judgement has now been given over the term itself, it is still not clear from which date the ruling will be enforced.

'The 2005 vintage is already in bottle,' one insider commented, 'so it is surely impossible to change anything now. The 2006 is in barrel, and the agrément (approval process for the granting of the appellation) has already begun, so we expect this ruling to be enforced from the 2007 vintage.'

Frederique de la Motte, director of the Alliance des Crus Bourgeios, told decanter.com, 'We will absolutely be trying again, and looking to redo the classification. Right now, you can't use the term at all and that's a disaster for all the property owners of cru bourgeois.'

The ban applies to all wines, whether formally included or excluded from the 2003 classification, and also extends to those few wines in Sauternes and Cotes de Bourg and Blaye which are still using the term.

Le Pin, Petrus over €1000 per bottle and climbing
Von wein-sigihiss, 16:47

July 9, 2007 - Sophie Kevany and Jane Anson, in Bordeaux

Bordeaux ultra-blue chip properties Le Pin and Pétrus have finally released their en primeur 2006 wine prices. Both will retail for more than €1000 per bottle.

Le Pin owner Jacques Thienpont said he had released his 2006 wine for €500 per bottle ex-chateau, the same price as the 2005 vintage.

The production of Le Pin in 2006 was 18 barrels, or 5,400 bottles. Thienpont said he had put almost all the 2006 production on the market, keeping back only two barrels or 600 bottles for personal use, for tastings and some for possible sale at a later date.

Thienpont also told decanter.com that just over two weeks ago he had expanded Le Pin to from 2ha to 2.2ha.

'I bought contiguous land from a neighbour, so I now have 2.10 hectares in one block and .10 hectares about 800 metres away,' he said.

The ex-chateau price of Pétrus could not be confirmed, but sources in Bordeaux suggest it was released to the trade last Wednesday at around €450-500 per bottle.

Both of the ultra-exclusive Pomerol properties are distributed privately and are not sold through the Place de Bordeaux system of wine merchants. They are now trading on what is described by merchants in Bordeaux as a 'parallel market'.

Here, Le Pin is currently said to be selling for about €750 per bottle to local merchants, for resale at about €1,000, and Pétrus for about €1,200 for resale at about €1,500.

Frederic Delmas of Etablissement Duclot, which distributes Pétrus for the Moueix family who own the estate, told decanter.com, 'As this is a private company, we don't release prices.'

The Pétrus price was said to have been flashed on the Duclot website on Wednesday night, but it has since been removed.

The UK agents for Pétrus, Corney and Barrow, said they would not have their retail price finalised until next week (as of Monday 16 July). The production from the 11.3ha estate in 2006 was about 30,000 bottles, said Oliver Hartley, Corney and Barrow sales director.

Corney and Barrow also receives a very small Le Pin allocation, but Hartley said this is kept to sell at a later date to a limited number of private customers. Hartley agreed that both wines would retail for more than €1,000 per bottle.

Le Pin and Petrus were both given five stars by James Lawther on decanter.com, with Le Pin 'topping the 2005', the critic says.
